COMMUNITY-LED SOLUTIONS TO END THE INCARCERATION OF WOMEN AND GIRLS

WE ARE REIMAGINING OUR COMMUNITIES
A collective contribution to changing decades of mass incarceration and law enforcement led policies

The National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls conducted a series of listening sessions led by formerly incarcerated and directly affected women and girls. These culminated in national town hall meetings in communities across the country.

The goals of the year-long exploration were to hear the experiences, ideas, projects, and recommendations of directly affected women and girls for ending incarceration of women and girls, and to reimagine their communities through implementation their strategies in their local neighborhoods.

In January 2019, we launched the initiative Reimagining Communities. It is our collective contribution to changing decades of mass incarceration and law enforcement led policies. Our approach is to shift the focus to community-led approaches designed by directly affected women and girls and implemented within our neighborhoods. We advocate for and encourage robust foundation investment in these projects and campaigns. By focusing on reimagining our communities, we hope to create local change that moves us closer to our goal of ending incarceration of women and girls, helps us define what that looks like, and ultimately make the current system obsolete.
