Our Local Power
Philosophy & Leadership

The National Council works to end the incarceration of women and girls. We are organizing ourselves across the country to connect our voices, ideas, field research, campaigns and projects as we coalition build toward our short and long-term goals.

As incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women, we know that a prison will never be a place for a woman or girl to heal and advance her life.

CALIFORNIA

Incarceration doesn’t solve any problems; it only succeeds in creating new ones. At A New Way of Life Reentry Project, we promote healing, power and opportunity for formerly incarcerated people by taking a multifaceted approach to mitigating the effects of, and ultimately eliminating, mass incarceration.                                           http://anewwayoflife.org

Caring Collectively for Women Prisoners

We monitor and challenge the abusive conditions inside California women’s prisons. We fight for the release of women and trans prisoners. We support women and trans people in their process of re-entering the community.       https://womenprisoners.org

Advocates Clemency for All Non-violent Drug Offenders. Behind every face on the CANDO website is a human with a story. Overly punitive drug laws create negative consequences that trigger a chain reaction upon innocent family members, friends and our society. Most people featured on our website have been locked up for decades. Until our drug laws change, the only relief these individuals have for mercy is a sentence commutation in the form of executive clemency.

We are a community of women who are impacted by the criminal ‘justice’ system and are making policy change. We are transforming ourselves and our communities through somatic healing. We will fight, unite and demand that all women who are currently or formerly incarcerated are able to walk in our dignity and integrity and have access to opportunities to live successful lives. The Present Reality

In Nashville's low-income neighborhoods, violence is an everyday fact of life. Gangs recruit the young, stealing their childhood and, often, their life—creating a public health issue for all Nashvillians. Homicide is today the No. 1 cause of death among African-American boys ages 10-24.

Nashville Peacemakers is working to raise children on truth, giving them a vision for their future before they are lost forever.                                                                                                https://www.nashvillepeacemakers.org

VIRGINIA

We envision a world where people who have been directly impacted by the criminal justice system have the supports and skills necessary to build lives as fully participating citizens, and directly impacted people have a key role in developing policies that impact them and their communities.                                            https://civilsurvival.org
